ser and estar: the basics

Spanish has two verbs for 'to be'. Ser says what something is; estar says how or where it is.

  • ser: identity, nationality and origin, job, description, time and dates. Soy Tom. Es inglés. Son las tres.
  • estar: location, feelings, temporary states. Estoy en casa. Está cansada.

A simple test: if the answer is about where or how you feel now, use estar.
