Present tense: regular verbs

Spanish verbs end in -ar, -er or -ir. Remove the ending and add the right one for each person.

Take the stem (habl-ar → habl-) and add the ending. Because the ending shows who is speaking, Spanish usually drops the pronoun: Hablo inglés = I speak English.

In Spain, vosotros is the informal 'you' plural: ¿Habláis español? Usted / ustedes (formal 'you') use the he/she/they forms: ¿Habla usted inglés?

The present also means 'I am doing' and often the near future: Mañana trabajo = I'm working tomorrow.
