Perfect and pluperfect

He comido (I have eaten) and había comido (I had eaten).

Both are made with haber + past participle. Participles: -ar → -ado, -er / -ir → -ido: hablado, comido, vivido. They never change and nothing goes between haber and the participle: Lo he visto.

Irregular participles: hacer → hecho, decir → dicho, ver → visto, escribir → escrito, poner → puesto, volver → vuelto, abrir → abierto, romper → roto.

  • Perfect (pretérito perfecto): in Spain it's used for actions earlier today, this week, this year, or in your life (ever / never): Hoy he trabajado mucho. ¿Has estado en México? Much of Latin America uses the preterite here instead.
  • Pluperfect (pluscuamperfecto): something that had happened before another past event: Cuando llegué, la película ya había empezado.
