The present subjunctive

A special verb form for wishes, feelings, doubts and requests — very common in Spanish.

How to form it: take the yo form of the present, drop the -o and add the 'opposite' ending: -ar → -e, -er / -ir → -a. hablo → hable, como → coma, tengo → tenga.

Irregular: ser → sea, ir → vaya, estar → esté, haber → haya, saber → sepa, dar → dé.

When to use it — usually after que, when the two parts have different subjects:

  • wishes: Quiero que vengas. ¡Que te mejores!
  • feelings: Me alegro de que estés aquí.
  • doubt and denial: No creo que sea verdad. (but Creo que es verdad)
  • advice and requests: Te recomiendo que vayas.
  • after para que, cuando (future): Cuando llegues, llámame.
