gustar: to like

Spanish says 'it pleases me' instead of 'I like it'. The verb agrees with the thing you like.

Me gusta el café = literally 'coffee pleases me'. So:

  • gusta + one thing or a verb: Me gusta la música. Me gusta bailar.
  • gustan + plural things: Me gustan los perros.

The person goes first as a pronoun: me, te, le, nos, os, les. To make it clear or stronger, add a + person: A Ana le gusta el tenis. A mí me encanta.

Verbs that work the same way: encantar (to love), interesar (to interest), doler (to hurt), apetecer (to fancy).
