The conditional and si-clauses

Would, could, should… and how to say 'if I had…, I would…'.

The conditional (would): add -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían to the infinitive: hablaría, comería. Irregular stems are the same as the future: tendría, haría, podría, saldría, diría, querría.

Use it for polite requests (¿Podría ayudarme?), advice (Yo que tú, iría) and imagined situations.

Si-clauses:

  • real: si + present → present / future: Si llueve, me quedo en casa.
  • imagined: si + imperfect subjunctive → conditional: Si tuviera dinero, viajaría.

Imperfect subjunctive: take the ellos preterite form, drop -ron, add -ra: tuvieron → tuviera, fueron → fuera, hablaron → hablara. Never use the conditional straight after si.
