por or para?

Both can mean 'for', but they are used in different situations.

para looks forward to a goal:

  • purpose (in order to): Estudio para aprender.
  • recipient: Es para ti.
  • destination: Salgo para Madrid.
  • deadline: para el lunes
  • opinion: Para mí, es fácil.

por looks at the cause or the way:

  • cause (because of): Gracias por todo.
  • through / around: Paseo por el parque.
  • means: por teléfono, por correo
  • exchange and price: Lo compré por diez euros.
  • parts of the day and duration: por la mañana
