Preterite or imperfect?

Two past tenses: the preterite tells what happened; the imperfect sets the scene.

  • Preterite: a finished action, one event, a sequence of events.
  • Imperfect: background, description, habits, something in progress. Llovía. Siempre comíamos paella los domingos.

Together: the imperfect is the action in progress, the preterite is the event that interrupts it: Dormía cuando sonó el teléfono (I was sleeping when the phone rang).
