The preterite (pretérito indefinido)

For finished actions at a specific time in the past: ayer, el lunes, en 2019, la semana pasada…

Regular endings:

  • -ar: -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron
  • -er / -ir: -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron

Watch the accents: hablo = I speak, but habló = he spoke.

Very common irregular verbs: ser / ir → fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron (same forms!); hacer → hice, hizo; tener → tuve; estar → estuve; poder → pude; venir → vine. Spelling changes in the yo form: llegué, busqué, empecé.
